You can try and search for register 0.50 domain on google, you will see a link to buy first year domain for 50cents. Do note that the renewal price is high though so if you do not wish to continue, you can switch to another domain registrar before your domain expires.

Save yourself the headache and go with Namecheap, simple yet great and less annoying. $10 is surely not a bad investment considering it's a project.

I always use namecheap...if you work it out for like $9.97 or whatever it is, it is a great price because you get domain + whois privacy.
Most of these sites offering cheap domains do not come with whois privacy, so you end up paying $10 extra or however much it is.
