Where to begin?

I'm 24 years old and was laid off earlier this year. I came to the well-reasoned conclusion that continuing work in my field with my credentials (graphic design at a vocational school) was not likely to provide enough money for a comfortable lifestyle, let alone to support a family or the like one day.

I'm going back to college, but doing the math there is no legal employment opportunity that I will be able to pursue that will pay enough without interfering with my ability to concentrate as a full-time student. I would like to figure out how to make money online in the odd hours I have free, here and there. I'm hoping I came to the right place.

Ultimately, I need to make more than a grand a month, and push towards $2000/monthly (or more) to be able to really set something aside and be comfortable. I'm pretty new to all of this, but I'm willing to do the work. I would love to get into a mentor relationship with someone who has experience as well.

From what I've gathered, a good place to start is in article writing. I'm a native speaker and an avid reader, so language will be fine. My first question then is: Where do I start? Is there a good place to "learn" what they are looking for or? What is the best place to begin? What is a "good rate?" and so on.

As well, if anyone has any comments or advice not directly related to the article writing aspect of this post (such as other ways to make money, strategies for long-term success, mentoring, and so on) feel free to reply here or in a private message. I know I don't have the post-count to start one, but I'm hoping I can reply to ones sent to me.

You did the first thing right. You become a member here. You will learn a lot of different way to make some cash. You just have to use some time.
I know many people are looking for article writers. Maybe you should learn some tools and offer them on Fivver?

If you have the means to get a headset with microphone and Dragon Naturally Speaking ... I say it is a must if you are going to trade time for money as a writer. It will allow you to turn out content about 3 times faster than typing. And btw, some places like the WarriorForum might be better for selling your services because the users tend to be less sophisticated and more willing to pay dearly for good content.

That being said, I would suggest that longer term you start thinking about passive income ... with sites that sell affiliate stuff or adsense or CPA or an e-course.

What I suggest you do is determine your emergency needs from month to month (to pay all the minimum bills you need to get by like rent, groceries, transporation, etc). Then set a goal to build up enough passive income through your own web content so that your basic needs are met.

Additionally, since you are a graphical designer, there are a few ways to turn that into cash ... a 10 week course on Photoshop as an example, or graphic design for hire (either locally or online).

The problem a lot of us have is focusing on one method until we can make good money at it. There are so many options.

Just this week I got excited again about flipping websites on Flippa. I went to flippsters.com and took a look at the most active sellers. These guys are building sites with no income and selling them in the $100 range .. or packaging them up and selling as a bundle for $300 range. So, for them, it becomes an ROI thing. If they average $50 to build a site and can safely sell the most of them for $100, they can double their money. The problem comes with scaling (most of the active guys only manage to sell 2 or 3 sites a day which is still potentially $100 to $150 profit per day). But if that interests you, there is a market ready to buy from you.

Summary:
- pick an income goal that covers your essentials
- long term build passive income sites (heck, even a good set of Squidoo pages can earn you a steady long term income)
- short term do whatever you need to actively earn income (design, teaching an ecourse/webinar, writing articles, etc)

someone in this forum is selling a readymade micro niche sites (forgot his name)... Get 9-10 such sites. Improve G ranking, get adds and you are 'ON'. That may not give you direct 2k ... But its really gonna help you. I'm also new dont know much but if i'd funds, i'd buy sites from that guy.
