Where do YOU outsource your work?

In the literal sense? Or figurative sense?
In my case - both :D

Haha, no, only had VAs from there. The best one I had was a designer, whom I could eventually trust doing jobs without asking many questions at all. Reliable and on-time every time. I actually ended up gradually bumping his pay to $900/mo, which is way good for PI. Too bad I had to let him go after a couple of years, 'cause I stopped selling design services.

You see.. All the fingers in the hand are not same, Likewise people in all countries.. There are some good and some bad! Its all about, how you choose people for your business..

I'm not saying Indian's are high here.. I just don't want you guys to say like "Specific country peoples are good / bad"

Cheers!

Yeah I think you're right too. I have, however, noticed very clear trends in suitability and performance of workers on certain tasks depending on their nationality - Americans, British, Indians, Australian, Filipinos, etc, all have their common traits.

Thanks for it.. What you have said is 100% true and exactly coincides my thoughts :) Cheers!

I outsource people from my town... standard is pretty low here and they are happy with 5$/day. Yes, only $5 a day and they will work 6 hours for me according to my instructions. :D I live in Macedonia.

I have been living in Romania for the past 2 years. If I had to choose between Romania Vs. Asia, I would definitely go for Romania all the way. They might not have the best work ethics but they are way better than whatever I ever outsourced from Asia.

I don't like messing with outsourcing websites like Odesk and so on. I prefer finding individuals who have some
talent that I can personally know and contact. So go ahead and find people through any means of social media.

I've actually never considered Romania... the countries I've used are India and the Philippines, and all my workers are in the Philippines now.
It makes sense that Romanians would be great workers, because Europeans in general seem to be quite focused on logic and facts, which is exactly what you need in a VA!

Is there a Romanian equivalent of onlinejobs.ph?

As I'm Romanian, most of the freelancers I know work on freelancer.com - and it just opened a Romania branch. You can also find tons of them on odesk, elance and fiverr. If you want to get Romanians post in your project "romanians preferred" and you'll get them all coming to you ;)

I think the original poster is really wanting to get away from those sites so finding an individual
Romanian outsource company would be preferred and something I would also be interested in.

I've dealt with outsourcing companies from Romania. Not much different from those from India or the Philippines really. The main difference is they actually charge a lot more. Say they pay the worker $7-800/mo for skilled labour, they'll charge you $1500-2000/mo. To compare with the former two countries, where you can hire a skilled worker for half that. And you don't really get quality from actual outsourcing companies in Romania either, even if it would make sense for them to keep you as a monthly paying client as long as possible.

My best experience has been with individual workers, paying on a pay-project basis. Sure, you'll get a lower hourly cost if you hire someone full-time, but if you only need a thing or two every once in a while, then going the per-project route is much better.

I thought many times to outsource my josbs on odesk, but I have the same feeling, seems they just want our money instead of make a quality job.

It takes a while to build a good outsource team and you can't just focus on one or two countries. Good workers can come from anywhere!

You also can't sort the wheat from the chaff by looking at odesk or fiverr as most workers tell outright lies regarding their experience or qualifications. I once had an Indian Computer Science grad who didn't know what while loops were in php lol!

So the best way of building a good team IMHO is start new guys off slowly, give them easy jobs and guage how good they are, then drop them / scale up their work as you see fit.

The other bonus from building a team slowly is you end up with honest, decent workers and aslong as you look after them they tend to look after you especially if you're paying them reasonably well.

Actually, my experience to building a good outsourcing team is to fire them quickly the first time they fuck up. I don't have time to waste training them. I'm very specific with my instructions and if they have problems understanding them, then the job is not for them. I'm not in this to babysit staff, I'm in this to make money.

The best ones I've had (and some still have) ended up going from very specific instructions to "hey, see this site/service/product? I want you to do something similar, but with x twist." And they'd take it from there and come up with something that would suit my needs perfectly. No need for me to read up on all the exact functionality of the example they're given, they would do the research themselves, figure out what's what and do their thing. Sure, there's always the occasional question and request for feedback, but nowhere near "Sir, what do I do now sir?" every fucking 5 minutes...

I've had a terrible time with outsourcing from India using odesk, not to say that they all are terrible.

If you do outsource, consider the following:
1. if they were subject matter experts as they claim to be, they ought to be making a good living more than the proposed hourly rate of $1-$5 an hour
2. make sure they use their account with the most hours logged when they work for you, and they dont just create a new one, incase they get a bad rating, they won't care.
3. get them to send you a report every day of their work
4. try and do milestone pay instead of hourly, so if they finish a project, they get paid
5. don't take nonsense from any of them, I've fired people within hours
6. don't use odesk
7. know your stuff
8. don't believe their credentials and get them to prove it to you by solving a problem you give them
9. report them if they wasted any single work minute for their leisure time
10. don't believe their excuses for missing deadlines (google's algo changed, I'm having difficulty programming this etc)

Hope that helps.

9. report them if they wasted any single work minute for their leisure time

ROTFL, funny you should mention this. I once handed a very simple backlinking project to an Indian company on Scriptlance. They didn't understand my instructions, wanted me to submit project description (again) according to their template etc. After a day or so of bantering back and forth, I told them to go fuck themselves and reposted the project. They told me I should re-imburse them for their wasted time. I said sure, if you re-imburse me for mine, I charge $500/h. They shut the fuck up really fast. :D

Hello,

im getting crazy with the workers on odesk. I just want them to post ads for me.
Most of these "experts" seem not to have any experience.

Where do you outsource your work?

Thanks

Just use fiv3rr for ad posting, or PPV for targeting specifics websites with ads for your niche. Report all of them for their hours and get a refund, there's a button on the rightside somewhere, just say that nothing was completed, candidate further lied about their skills and therefore is unable to do the work they claimed they were able to handle. Screenshot conversations that prove that point (pretty easy).

dmgx -I hear you, I realize I cursed the most in my life combined when dealing with them clowns. This one moron tried to extort me once, saying that he'll give me my login info if I gave him a bonus, like I know how to get that info seeing how it's my server, or I just click forgot password. Instead, I just screenshoted the skype conversation, got him to admit more of his scam, then sent all the info to the administrator and got him banned for a couple of months.

You learn how to be a boss when people try crap like that on you.

I agree with you. I have built a team of Indians and Americans that do a really good job for me and if everyone plays fair, then whether it is the employees in America or the employees in India, they will kick a** for you. All comes down to how you treat your people.

Apart from all the the hand rules for job according to country, always go for guys who have 4.5-5 star reviews etc. Those guys care for their ratings as it is their biggest assets and generally do not mess around.

if you want success hiring on odesk set the filter right - the user should be active in last 6 months, fedddback 5, can show proof of a task that was similar to your current task.
