I have a job that might take half a day to complete so I don't need a month long VA contract. Is it possible to find some that will work for this short of a period?

Freelancer is what I use. Perfect place to outsource your work for both short and long term projects.

Once you post a project (it's free), you can be guaranteed at least 20 submissions. Now, just pick and choose which one you prefer

Go to one of the freelancing type sites and pay your workers by the hour, then you can be specirfic on exacly how long you hire them for.
