Where do you get legit backlinks?

I'm building an authority site so I want a decent backlink profile that's 100% legitimate, to be safe from Google updates.

Where do I get legit backlinks? So far, I've managed to get myself listed in a couple PR4-PR5 web directories, I have a squidoo page, and I have a post on a legitimate PR3 blog of the same topic.

Where else can I go?

Sending direct solicitations to other authority sites with decent PR can work. Use the contact us e-mail or admin email.
