Where did you learn SEO?

Lots of trial and error, seeing what works, what is easy, what works but is inefficient, what makes very little difference.

It's a long process, and one that I feel has led me to flippant churn and burn as anything you do off page could be considered blackhat, and as such incur a penalty. Thus I'd rather just work on a high-speed dive bomber and really go for it, knowing it will burn out, than put a lot of time and energy and limited results just to burn anyway.

Same here.

I'm learning SEO from blackhatworld. Why because i dont trust any ebooks or so, why would someone who earns a thousands $ with SEO have a time to write some ebook :( .. That is kinda weired.
 
When I was 12 I built a website and no one went it.. I so I googled how to get more traffic.. and SEO came up.. and now Im here at 24 :)
 
I learned by testing and thinking outside the box, you wont find anything absolute anywhere online. Anyone who has the SEO blueprint to getting to top of google and living through the constant updates wont share their information with anyone.
 
I learn basics by creating a website in low competition niche and worked at it until I ranked some keywords.

I got advanced experience by work, testing and reading at BHW.
 
Once you understand the basics of SEO, the very essence of what it is, you pretty much teach it to yourself. Reading opinions and case studies are very valuable, but at the end of the day, if you aren't doing your own thing, you won't succeed in the long run.

No, once I find a term that I am unfamiliar with it, I just search for the meaning on it either on Google or BHW. If I find another term that I am unfamiliar with, I bookmark it so that I can read about it later. I also usually discover tools during the learning process that help me with SEO (Moz toolbar, SEOcentro, Google Keyword Planner). I've always learnt better like this.

- Made a website
- Learned some nonsense from the web
- Implemented
- Learned more nonsense from the web
- Implemented
- Stumbled upon BHW, which helped me to sort out part of the garbage I've learned previously
- Made more websites
- Implemented
- Went to the source (Google patents)
- Implemented
- Started to experiment
- Profit

I got started with practicing SEO on Blogger (which is how I hosted my business website before I switched to a self-hosted Wordpress website), except I was implementing everything I knew from BHW into it from the very beginning. It's a good thing I didn't have to go through that "nonsense on the web" phase!
 
There's always more to learn in SEO. It's like a never ending how to book. Google, BHW, and trial and error all keep me up to speed.
 
Keep looking for information about SEO on the internet forum, especially black hat world :)
 
I got a SEO Reverse Engineering degree from the University of Trial & Error a decade ago but you are lucky, you have BHW to virtually take you by the hand and lead you step by step.
 
So from my understanding, there is no real process to ranking in steps 1-10? It's all about finding ways and experimenting in how to rank... eg. 50 social signals, 10 web 2.0's, 20 high PR blog posts and see if that get's you ranked.. if not, scale it up to even more.

So that was just an example of how just kinda "winging" it?
 
Seriously, you are only going to learn by getting your feet wet and trying. Be prepared to fail a few times before you see results.
 
With little more than the shirt on my back I went to India. I then came into contact with a sherpa who helped my locate the base camp of Mount Everest. It was then that I began my twelve day journey to the top in search for the ledgendary source of all SEO, the 120 year old guru master. When I finally reached his encampment I had to cross a bridge, but suddenly a ninja jumped out and made me solve three riddles. Upon solving these deadly riddles I was granted entrance to the temple and all the knowledge held by the SEO guru master.

Also I bought a book on Amazon and read these forums and used common sense.
 
Yeah... I know that he teaches extremely high-level SEO up there, completely top class. What time you reached there? I heard that at to the one who reaches at night, he teaches black hat SEO, and in the morning, the white hat SEO.
