I'm new to seo, i've been making my first few backlinks over a couple of days and i noticed i have a backlink directly to my site that i didn't do myself, sorry if i'm being a total noob but is it ok? do i need to check the site isn't dodgy etc? thanks

Not sure what type of backlinks and from which websites you found them, however, It's possible to appear backlinks for any website from other sites like WHOIS information database sites and if your website has quality content when some one finds it they may post backlinks towards your website.

Your domain name belonged to someone else before your re-purchased it. Find that person and ask him/her if you're sure you haven't pinged your url, or mentioned your site on any other place, and someone else has (then) mentioned your URL at some other place. :)

Could be some other reasons...

I'm agree with this statement.

hi i've looked at the link and it's from http://www.gipaf.com/ it looks pretty ok to me, what do you think? some sort of domain registering service?

Yeah, guess so. If your site has anything to do with intellectual property rights (pretty scary stuff :D), then your site's ex-owner could have been one of those p3sty lawyers. That also explains a single backlink...

That site is actually a small-time site indexing some websites belonging to some intellectual property attorneys and displaying their email addresses along with their information.

P.S.:
Find out the link on their pages, and then create a similar email address. You will get some related business from their visitors that was coming (hopefully) to the ex-owner. ;) I hope (for you) that this will not be some kind of intellectual property violation if you do so though... disregard my little advice if it is. lol
