I never use the search engine. I don't see the point of it much anymore. It is an intermediary and not a very good one at that. Take for example there overuse of stuffing their results with Youtube or just the same site 3 times on one page. They only reason people use it is because of imperfect knowledge. Now 'searching for stuff' has destinations to why do people still use it?

Want food reviews go to Yelp.
Want news go to BBC etc.
Want some product go to Amazon.
Want a holiday go to Expedia...

You get the point. Do you guys still use 'search'?

Now on top of this its content discovery is crap, well half crap, because the stuff that maybe should rank is put into sandpits, behind some filter firewall, or some other bizarre ranking method, and at the same time its like trying to find a book in a library where the librarian keeps moving the fucking books around?? What is so good about this site? It won't be around forever so...

I used to use Google's search to find new websites, although in recent years I've found myself at the same sites (mind you, I searched for a variety of topics).

I mainly use Google's search function to search Black Hat World (site:blackhatworld.com), to research my competitors (or some other SEO-related task), and to look for 'labelled for reuse' images to Photoshop.

It already is! When I search for 1 simple thing, it throws 10 different commercial results at me on its first page. :)

Yes some people will visit the same sites but most dont.

If you have a question who do you ask? If you want more information who do you go to?

You type it into google and it shows you where to go.

Google wont be going anywhere anytime soon.
 
That's what they will say with humans who drive cars, people from the future would laugh at us. OK Google is a modern librarian, but I dare say a sort of poor one.

Yes. Dozens of times per day. I start 99% of all web browsing sessions on Google.

You're in a tiny tiny tiny minority with your approach. And you've listed 4 things we can do out of millions of things online.
 
The majority of google users do not even know what it is. They think its the internet itself. To them, Google is the door to the internet and that is where you should be starting your browsing experience from.
 
Most people still use search, the OP's approach seems very limited.

Maybe I want to see more than just what Expedia has to offer?
 
Yeah, I use Google daily too. Mainly for KW/competitor research.

I see what you are saying about the results returned, but you have to remember that these imperfections are the reason that those of us who build and rank niche sites are able to do so.

As far as where it is going...nowhere. People in SEO/IM are a minority. We look at results and search engines much differently than the average person. And as mentioned above, there are a lot of people out there who associate google with the internet.

Yeah...I still use google to find Yelp, BBC, Amazon, Expedia etc. :D
I mean...who types in the address bar 'amazon.com' ?

LE: Now seriously, google will become irrelevant only when it will stop making money...like any other business in this world.

The correct question should be: when will Google.com stop making money?

Site gets hit bitch about Google, yes it is shit but people are always going to use it. I also get the feeling that the "Fuck you Google brigade" are still closet Googlers.

OP - I use Google all the time for business and personal. It's still useful to me. I do think Google will lose some search traffic in certain niches if that makes sense. Like how you mentioned if you want information about restaurants, you'll go to Yelp to search. I do that too but usually I'll still go to Google to look at their Google reviews or find their business website.
 
I think it never will unless there's any decent competitor, but that's not the case right now. I mostly use it not for trivial things, but to find things like content on other sites like bhw, pastebin, github etc where G's results are far better than respective site's built-in search engine.
