When to start linkbuilding?

I'm working on a CMS site just now. When the site is done it'll not really have very much added to it. The structure of the pages is final and all the pages have been created, but not all of them have final copy.

Is it worth submitting the site to directories and other search engines now before it's complete, in the hope that it starts getting getting some links before Google spiders the site?

Or should I hold off doing any of that until after the copy is finished?

Finish the site, then submit. You don't want the SE spiders rolling around the thinking your site is thin content crap, and you want to maximize your chances of approval for directory submissions.

I am even a fan of blocking the site with robots.txt until it's 100% ready to roll.

Sounds like a good call- basically no need to rush it and a site that doesn't look finished definately won't do you any favours whoever it's put in front of.

New sites get crawled even if they don't have any links, dns and new domain lists will create links inmediately. In fact google bot hit a site several times per day even if not updated.

I would say that social bookmarking and some small scale authority links (think high PR/authority web 2.0 profiles). Then what you can do to gain some authority is build links to the links you built. The other option is to have 5 completely unique pieces of content written and drop them on sites like goarticles/ezinearticles/blogger/wordpress or any other social blogging platform that allows links, and point links at the site your trying to rank for and then link to those with authority links as well (make sure they are unique, or very well done spinners so that they get indexed). After about a month or two of building authority you can then begin to start some more heavy lifting in terms of link building.

If the website is operational and looks finished AND the page you want to SEO is final and complete, start link building.

a little off topic ... however, none of the above ... things are certainly getting sticky in the google algo's lately and I personally would prefer the oldie but goldie way of site to site, it carries the most weight which transfers to your serps ... mind you saying that .. the larger 'blogging' sites still have a positive effect and unique quality articles uploaded to particular authority article sites also still carry some clout ...

I suppose you could say .. if your going to knock someone out then best hit them real hard a few times than to jab the hell out of them and merely annoy them a little ..

It may seem 'old' fashioned . .but it works, has always worked and will always work ...
