If I understand correctly, you only want to ping your site when you have new content or updated old content.

Is this correct?, or would you want to ping more often and for other reasons?

no reason to ping your site
1 ping wont guarantee anything
many pings- red spam bulb with go off

mass ping pages with links to your site and you will get crawled in a day or even hours
