If you are going after small keywords then after the post are index they should show up in the rankings after a few days.
If you are going after keywords with some competition then you might not show up until you build links.
Its possible to rank a new site in about 2 months.

all my posts are indexed and the only seo i'm doing right now is on-page plus i don't know if this will help or not but i found out using the wayback machine that my domain was registered in 2001 and dropped since then until i registred it again when i bough my hosting.

If the previous site wasn't spammy, you have no reason to worry about it. I think you should be doing off-site seo too. It's the only way you can rank for competitive keywords.

first of all, your website should be indexed in search engines
and second is that, if you are not doing any kind of backlinking than you would not rank for first page of google
good content + link building = ranking
but it all depends on keyword. if its easy keyword (long tail) then you can rank for first page in just few weeks but if your keyword is not easy one than you have to wait for months.

I did the same thing, just focused on writing content around certain subject without too much emphasis on keywords. I have had the site up for about 40 days and I have about 81 keywords ranking in the mid 20 positions with some top 10 as well, traffic is good and my adsense earnings are starting to trickle in at around the $2/day mark.
I have a few laser targeted blog comment links from high end sites like new york times and washington post and web 2.0 stuff, nothing fancy just yet. The site was doing the google dance for the first 3 weeks and is finally settling a little, with the exception of new posts, they do that everytime but it's expected of course.
Just keep at it bro, build some links here and there and promote your content on social media sites. The first 2-3 months are always a nail biting experience lol. But by then you should have about 100 posts if you keep the velocity up, then you can start ranking hard.
Make sure to look for outreach opportunities in your niche if possible, 3 of those backlinks in my profile are with some heavy hitters and I have about 10 more scheduled.

Simple answer:"It depends !" and on a lot of factors.

You can rank without backlinks but getting top ranking for a competitive keyword will be hard.
