When is a thread old or inactive?

I am often searching forums for a specific topic and sometimes the threads are older, but the only ones available on a particular thing. In fact I find them engaging and post a reply. Sometimes they are 3 months old, sometimes 3 years or older. Anyhow, it seems board moderators here and on other boards dislike posting to older topics.

Unless there is a rule that specifies when a thread is old or outdated, why not just close such threads, automatically? Oh ... why close them if nobody is supposed to post in them anyhow? But what's the thing how we can know when a thread is old or inactive if there is no common sense visible? I see a lot of 5 year old topics that are still being bumped ....

If they're bumped meaningfully, then it's a gain. If they're bumped for "thanks", then they should be cleaned/locked so that they don't clog the more meaningful updated ones.

That's because whenever you bump an old thread, people are more likely to respond to the OP rather than you.

I've come across a few threads recently that were bumped, but the thread bumper had some pertinent information to add to the thread. It's like what @jazzc said, if there's a good reason to bump a thread, there's no problem with it.

Bumping threads is a bit like our affiliate links rule. It's not that you're not allowed to bump threads, it's just that very few people do it the right way.

Are those 5 year old threads being brought back from the thread, or did they have a semi-active conversation going on in them this whole time?

Many old threads need to be locked especially in WTB and hire a freelancer.
