When is a domain available for backorder/reserve?

I am looking to purchase a few domains with various domains:

• .com (2 years)
• .net (1 year)
• org (1 year)
• co (1 year)

Is there any other I'm missing? I'm not bothered about ones like .biz and .int or country-specific domains .co.uk and .ca

Also, if I was to purchase the above when would the 1-year-old ones become available to backorder?

After the domain in the Redemption period, it will be released by the Registry into the public pool (normally, domains get released in about 70-80 days (in rare cases, up to 120 days) after the expiration).
If you want backorder the domain try using any backordering service.
Based on many years personal experience I recommend namejet for this purpose.

Cheers. So say someone back ordered one of mine, as long as I just renewed it before it expired its still mine right?

Yes, if you keep your domain renewed, it will stay yours.

Years ago, someone thought they had hit the jackpot and posted on here that they'd backordered Google.com

Ahh yeah, that makes sense. I didn't think it was right that people could just backorder any site!

So I'm just going to go with the ones below as it's a little Instagram side project that may go overspill onto a website.

When I started my first real business I bought the co.uk and didn't bother with the .com version, 4 months down the line we got busy and thought we better buy the .com also and guess what, someone random bugger had bought it, its quite a unique name (includes a UK city name etc) so I'm 99.9% sure that someone just wanted to make a quick bit of cash.
