When I hire a freelancer to do web design work for me I usually just give my FTP details out which I think some people may say is a stupid idea. I read on another post that I can create an account for the freelancer? My host is dreamhost if that matters. If anyone can help me out and explain what this means and how I create the account for the freelancer, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

It's called an FTP user account. You can create an account for your web designer and set specific restrictions so that they can do their job. Below, I've linked to articles and posts that provide details on how to create a new FTP user account and how to restrict an FTP user's access.

Instructions:
  1. Log in to the Account Control Panel. Select the Users tab, and click on the Users link:
  2. Click on the link labelled Add New User
  3. Fill in the requested user information (name, password, etc.)
  4. If you have already used all of the users that come with your plan, you will have to add a new user as an add-on service. Do this by clicking on the Add Services link. See the article in the "Related Links" column to the left of this window for complete instructions for adding a new service.
