I don't quite get this.

As I see it atm most people, unless they are internet savvy, don't use a term in quotes and when searching for something would instead just put the phrase in google without quotes and hit enter.

Why then do ppl talking about keyword research always say how important it is to look at exact match?

There is a big difference in comp when you hit enter with or without quotes (with quotes being many less).

If potential buyers are not using quotes then shouldn't we be looking at this for the true competition?

I imagine I am missing something here seeing as everyone goes on about searching in quotes so if someone would be kind enough to fill me in...

When you use quotes, google will show you only your real competitors.

Real competitors are these sites who are optimizing for that keyword really hard. For e.g, a real competitor will have keyword in meta tags, multiple times in body and will be getting keyword anchored links.

When you do a search with quotes, google will show you only results that he thinks is ~100% relevant to the keyword and you should be optimizing against these people in order to get to #1. Optimizing against others will be a waste of time if you see what I mean.

Hope this answers your ?

You see you are missing the whole picture here. You are right when people goes to big G and search they don't use " " but when you are doing keyword research for your niche you have to use " " for your target keyword to see who are you real competitors for your keyword exact match. if you go to google and search for buy facebook fans you will see more than 100,000,000 results but does results include the 1,340,000 that are ranking for exact match plus all the other ranking for keywords like buy real facebook fans, buy fb fans, buy real fb fans, buy facebook fans cheap, ect. ect.; so that number is not the number of your real competitors for your target keyword. By placing quotes is the only way to know who are your real competitors.

I hope that helps you understand.

thanks for the info

Ah thanks guys that makes more sense.

So the quotes are to ascertain who has done proper SEO...

...and so the ones without quotes would not be any competition anyway?

Exactly just worry about real competitors. If you can out rank them, then is no worry for the rest.

The thing is, the sites ranking 1-10 on broad match are outranking the "real" competitors...

If that is true then is goes against what everyone else has been saying here...

This is confusing me now. I rank third on broad and first on "kw" yet on another I am first on "kw" but position 12 (second page) on broad.

I suppose a safe bet is just keep blasting till you hit number one in each :)
