When Do You Stop Link Building

Eventually, there comes a time when building extra backlinks doesn’t make any difference to your page. Is there a limit to how many links you can build, beyond which you start working on content optimization?
In my opinion there is no time where you stop building backlinks completely. You should take backlinks along your journey and the backlinks must be high-authority and relevant. You shouldn't on extra backlinks alone. Optimise your content and manage other aspects of SEO as well. The thing is that you shouldn't rely on one thing and you also shouldn't leave something behind thinking that will not work etc.

once the links stop moving the needle i'd focus on improving the content and on page site no point building links just for the numbers
Yeah, at some point, more links aren’t going to help a page that doesn’t satisfy search intent. I would make sure my content gaps, internal linking, and on-page optimization are sorted first.

i believe that link building efforts should be scaled back when the diminishing marginal returns become apparent. rather than asking whether or not there are enough links built for the site i would analyze the changes since the previous set of links was acquired nd determine if anything has happened to make it worthwhile to conttinue building links.

Only as long as your site is crap and can't attract natural backlinks I guess? ;)

If you can get natural backlinks automatically, then you don't need to fake any backlinks. This only happens to those with good sites, that have ever green content though. What is your site based on?
Totally agree. Also curious about OP's website!

There is no link count where it stops, so stop looking for a number. Watch the response instead. Log the position before and after each batch, and if two batches of similar quality move nothing, links are not what is holding the page back. Then it is usually an intent mismatch, the wrong page type for that SERP, or content missing the subtopics the ranking pages cover.

Also don't drop links to zero. Links churn and competitors keep adding, so on a contested term a page that stops completely tends to slide slowly. Go to a maintenance trickle and put the main effort into the page.

Once I achieve my desired rankings, I’ll gradually reduce the frequency of building new backlinks and eventually stop altogether so I can focus on content. After that, I’ll regularly monitor my backlink profile and replace any backlinks that are lost.
