Anyone see any studies or experience on what gets hit or can bypass penguin? How can we safeguard our sites for when they run penguin updates?

The vast majority of your backlinks should not have your main keywords as anchors.

That's what I was thinking but wondering how to utilize our other backlinks. I understand branded could be good to keep high and maybe LSI keywords otherwise.

Branded, lsi and some anchor that includes the keyword and keyword variations. The less direct anchor the better I think.

OP: Nobody can tell you what this next update will hold. We know what happened last time, but that may be useless once the next update hits. If you're worried then go LOWER than you think you need to. Worst case scenario you're bleeding targeting and can increase it slowly after the update. I'm a big fan of raw URL and longtail LSI.

I'd worry less about ratios and more about the sources of your links. As others have mentioned a majority of the link building stuff out there is crap so it's all about choosing wisely.
