For the most appealing graphical interface, use Mandriva Linux.
Ubuntu is the most easy to use but not the safest.
After 1-2 years you could try to use Slackware.
If you want to do "security testing" use the Backtrack distribution (you do not have to install anything, it runs from CD).
I find Debian to be a tough experience for a beginner![]()

Ubuntu Linux. I've seen 2 or 3 different distributions and Ubuntu is better. I haven't tried Debian yet.
There is also a distribution which is ideal for hackers and/or security professionals, BackTrack. I haven't tried it yet, but once I buy another PC, I will try it. Definitely.
