Is it good/bad/somewhere in between?
A programming language is only as good as its programmer and the frameworks and api available.
tell you what OP, let me know what kind of program you want to make / what type of coding you want and i shall tell you whether Ruby is the best.
But word of warning, Ruby is quite a steep learning curve
I'm into bot making mainly. Scrapers with abilities to login/create profiles on forums are what I'm working on right now.
I'm looking for something that is convenient and quick. Something I can customize POST/GET request, follows redirection, good parsing libraries, etc without too much hassles. Nothing too fancy.
It's not that I don't enjoy learning more about programming, but time is a bit tight unfortunately.
ruby is fucking awesome. it produces the cleanest code and is very intuitive.
if you're into scraping check out gems like mechanize, watir, event manager, nokogiri etc etc.
Ruby is indeed fucking awesome. Can you believe how easy web-automation can really be with mechanize? If only it could handle javascrpt now, oh well guess theres no way around constructing those ugly openers.
+1 for ruby as well. I'm crawling/scraping/parsing a half million pages a day with it.
+1 ruby is very cool and easy also check out python and node.js
guys can you elaborate how simple is it to post a wordpress comments with ruby/mechanize?
still havent got to get my head around this library
its nice and strong language...
its not about the language really its about whither you will like it or not..
