What's your hashtag strategy?

I've always been of the opinion that avoiding the huge tags (travel, beautiful, instagood, etc.) should be avoided like the plague. Focus on pinpoint niche tags with under 1M posts.

Who else follows this strategy? Am I limiting myself (20K account) by not using the larger tags?

I generally end up in the top of the tags I use, which is good... but is it worthwhile if few people are seeing them?

I personally put about 8-12 hashtags, 2-3 of those are big ones (1mil+) and the rest are small ones. It won't hurt if you have a few huge hashtags, might as well put a few to see if you can hit the top in those consistently.
 
I don't use much hashtags. I use hashtags who are very very related to my niche. That way it takes more time to gain followers but in the end you have much more engagement.
 
i use smaller/medium specific hashtags for my niche, i ve played as a user just clicking on a hashtag and then clicking on related hashtags so thats what i wanted to cover.
 
Well, if you are within the travel niche, then travel is a very relevant hashtag, no matter how big or small it is.

Anyway, I'm daily getting on the top of niche relevant hashtags going from 500K to 50M, other days I pick another set of extremely specific hashtags going from 50K-1M, which are also using the language of the region I target. Which ever set I see no difference in average likes or gain of followers. Some days I forget to add my hashtags, and I don't see any difference either. So I only use hashtags as an easy tool to see the progress of my uploads/account as the engagement grow, it should be easier to get on the top of bigger and bigger tags.

Perhaps if you are able to get on the top of the big ones with 100M+ like travel it would make a difference.
 
Start with small hashtags (less than 300K posts per hashtag), unless your account is big. Wishing that you'll hit the big hashtags is like buying a lotto ticket. Yeah, you got a chance, but chances are you're not going to be the winner.

Go strong with the small hashtags, little by little others will get accustomed to seeing your photos there, start liking your photos and then following you. This is like a snowball effect. You get bigger, your photos get more likes, after a while you can start putting bigger and bigger hashtags and continue the process. Once you start getting 3K+ likes of REAL people, then your photos will get to the top of the bigger hashtags.

What is this based on? Your experience? There is almost no gain, if any at all, to be exposed at hashtags which you can reach the top by 3k likes.

By my own personal experience running other's accounts. I've noticed that the same size accounts, following the same large accounts, everything else, settings being the same; gain more followers when reaching the top of the hashtags, then when not.

Of course, if an account does not have HQ photos and just gets fake likes, nobody is going to like or follow that crappy photo, just because it's at the top of the hashtags.
 
I never see a post show up in the explore that has more than a couple hashtags. Maybe I just look in different niches. But I have never come across a pic in explore that had 20 hashtags.

Someone here once said that if you add too many hashtags, IG will not put it in explore because it assumes it's spam

That sounds strange, when we are allowed to put 30 hashtags.
 
It is always considered best practice to have relevant hashtags on your posts. I use SocialBlade, however there are many other tools out there that will do the trick.
 
It's like researching for relevant keywords too...like I usually did for my blog. And then I just typed in the Google search bar for these specific hashtags and use them.
