noindex the author page.
index only the article page.
google crawls and indexes both pages. But can't decide which one to show.
Since your author page (might) have better authority (due to each individual article is linking to it), then it will show this page in SERP.
this happened to me too. I had a /blog/ subfolder page, which had 40 articles. Sometimes Google showed /blog/ page on SERP even for searching title of individual article. So i just put noindex to blog page, and my individual page again started ranking.
