I have seen some threads that speaks little of guest posts in terms of quality link building and the fact that its a waste of time and resources. But, yet others promote guest posts as a means of link building, what are the differences? What kind of guest post should a person look out for? and the kind of blogs that yields results?

The harder a link is to get, the more power it will hold, most of the time. There are websites where you can post a guest post for free. Those are pretty low in value, as anyone can post. Now there are websites that are high authority and only knowing an editorial staff member will get you a link. Those are considered very valuable and are sold for thousands. That's the simple explanation, of course, there are a lot of factors deciding if a link is worth it or not

The differences in what??

If done right, guest posting is a good way of building links that will grow in power over time (when the pages giving you those links get indexed and ranking in google and when they acquire or inherit authority) which will, in turn, boost your site's authority and rankings. But like I said, you need to do guest posting properly, otherwise the results will be poor if you're guest posting on link farms or "jack of all trades" blogs

To get an idea of how to approach webmasters / editors / bloggers for quality links check out this Ahrefs tutorial, although I recommend that you watch the entire course anyway because there are a few eye-openers in there that newbies don't know about SEO:

Guest posts backlinks are really still working well since the SEO is evolving. But there are certain validation need to do before choosing the blog.

You must check the various factors of the blog including history, domain authority, spam score, traffic, ip, and more.

It is the one of the number 1 factor still for ranking in first page.

What kind of guest post should a person look out for?
Niche and topical relevance.
Backlinks and anchors should be natural looking.
Avoid sites backlinks used to inflate metrics like DA,PA,DR,UR.....
OBL this is very important, this will filter out link farms.
Also check the OBL of linking domains.
Websites wayback history and age.
Restored expired domains should be checked carefully as most are part of link farms.

OP,

There is nothing wrong with guest posts, the issue is the guest post providers usually.

When you buy cheap, you get these in the T&Cs;

Can we approve content or sites before you place the posts?
We do not allow you to choose the content or the sites. The content is written to a result-driven formula that is niche relevant, and our experienced staff chooses the sites to ensure the best diversity and results.
< So basically they will happily get their spun content published onto the dogshit site that they own or they bought for $10 because it meets the DA50 offered.

There are guest posts, then there are PBN links advertised as guest posts. Then there are $10 links farm links sold as $50 guest posts.

What Kind of Guest post should we look out for?

In general, we look for
1) Niche
2) Backlinks
3) Anchors
4) History of the site
5) Spam Score
6) Domain Authority
7) Traffic
8) Ip
