Whats with expired domains that have high DA but no backlinks? How is the DA still high? I always discard these but I was just curious as to why it occurs because I encounter a huge number of these. I tried a quick search but I didn't turn up anything on the subject. It was a very quick search though, so if anyone knows or can point me to a good explanation I would much appreciate it out of curiosity.

there was backlinks and now there are not
That much I can work out. My question is why does the DA stick around? Does it ever decay or go down? Does it just stay at its historical maximum value and never decrease?

Well the DA or PA or any other matrix like TF ,CF etc do decay and it go down but it take some time to update.
What might be causing a drop or rise in DA,PA.

Run a backlink audit to see if you have any backlinks that need to be removed, disavowed, or updated?
Does this link help my website?
Is this link relevant to my website?
Would I trust this site (that's linking to me) if I landed on it?
Is the website or content in which I am being linked from topically relevant to my website?
If you check metrics - does anything about the metrics (domain authority, page authority,Majestic, SEMRush traffic/ranking data, etc) make me feel uneasy?
Your backlink profile requires regularly check ins, so be prepared to do this every so often

They're not updated as much as other metrics. that's why.

I would ignore it most of times and only care about the backlinks profile.
