I tried posting in a subreddit, bought a few hundreds upvotes and added a pop up in my site promoting my subreddit. Worked pretty well, but it's essentially crossposting.

You could invite people to be moderators to your subreddit, I saw one guy invited myself and a hundred other people to mod their subreddit. Then you could unmod them but not sure how good that is for the long term growth
