Whats the best CMS System for bigger sites?

What CMS system to you guys use for bigger websites? Is wordpress still the best one? I am using Cmsmadesimple at the moment, but I think its struggling with the amount of content on my site now.
Thiking of moving to something new, not suer whats best?

Wordpress was designed as a blog, not a CMS.

Joomla = The beginner CMS. Lots of plugins, lots of functionality, lots of slowness and problems.
Drupal = The advanced CMS. Not as much plugins, not as much functionality, used on very large sites and "easy" to modify.
Expression Engine = The paid CMS. Even less plugins, but it has a better admin interface and usability than the previous. Skinning is also quite easy.


Though to straight up answer your question, there is no best. It's what fits your needs and requirements the most. Wordpress can be scaled to handles thousands of concurrent visitors. Joomla can. Drupal can. Expression Engine can. They can all handle thousands/tens of thousands of posts. The only real difference I would find between them all is that you're more likely to find shitty exploitable plugins in Joomla and Wordpress more often than you would in Drupal and Expression Engine.
 
Wordpress is the best one. Only thing, you need to have all the security plugins in place, because the big sites are always prone to hacks and wordpress is vulnerable.
 
Ok, thinking about trying Drupal maybe. Does that have a good forum module or should I use something like phpbb?

I've got some pretty big sites running on wordpress. I was convinced a few years back that HTML was the way forward with big sites but I don't think there's much you can't do with wordpress.

A friend of mine develops plug ins and custom themes, he keeps raving on about concrete5 might be worth having a look at that.

I say WordPress is the best, When you stop thinking of post and categories as just blogging or news and build the site yourself you will find it is VERY powerful.

But as said before, (I am dealing with now) get security plugins, even if you have to pay for a good one. I have a site that has 3 news channel, user journals, a forum and about 90 pages. . All with in Wordpress.
 
I have to agree with wordpress too. It is so much more that a blog since 3.0 I have had many custom sites built on it as a platform and it is really surprising what you can do with custom hooks.. Plus it is far less bulky than many of the architecture projects out there. They run so many bs queries for every function just in case there may be a need for a feature. wp just looks for hooks and if they are there they get run.
 
Wordpress, hands down. No question about it.

BUT don't limit yourself to free plugins and themes to get the most out of WP. Premium templates and plugins add so much value to your site(s) and there's a variety of extensions available (WPMU, Buddypress, Marketpress- just to name a few.)

Wordpress is the best because it's so easy to use and yet also so powerful- ideal for a simple static site or a dynamic, powerful web presence. Oh Wordpress how I love thee...
 
If you gona use it yourself only, best solution will be build your own CMS, leaving out all the rubish functionality build in in the usual cms.
 
Drupal was certainly thought with that in mind... But I always found it to be so clunky and clumsy and the developers kinda stuck up and confused about the very goal of the project, especially progressing with the version numbers... I'd still stick to wordpress with the appropriate caching plugins and joomla if I had to go with a very trafficked website these days. After all if WP is good enough for techcrunch... ;)
 
Pringo and Community Server are two enterprise CMS's -- both are pretty expensive. They both have a list of fortune 500's who use their CMS.

I never use plugins/modules that add functionality when it should be its own seperate application. Go with vBulletin/SMF and write your own integration. SMF is easy to do with their hooks and easy to understand processing. vBulletin has a crap load more features and options, so it would take longer for that + cost I think $300?

phpBB has fallen out of the race in forum software IMHO. Holding onto their rigid structure from the early 2000s.

Meh. Just because a forum can make blogs doesnt mean it should. Or that Windows ME can be a server. Some things just shouldnt be, and depending on his need for a CMS wordpress could crumble or require extensive modification. The database design also doesn't reflect being a CMS. It still built as a blog.

If you need a really highly scalable and secure system with gbs of data, Wordpress might not be a good choice. Yii Framework is something that i would recommend instead. It is purely MVC based, uses db relations pretty well, sql injection is almost impossible because of the prepared queries, and it supports PDO (so you have lots of db options). It also has auto code generation (Model, Controller, view and CRUD code i.e. Create Read Update Delete) based on your db structure. So you can develop systems pretty quickly. Joomla, Drupal are also good choices but they have modules that you might not need. Go for Yii ...

Very well said there. I don't like Wordpress's db structre at all( in terms of a CMS / E-commerce structure). It is designed to fail when your data goes over than 8 digit.

Yes, Drupal have a forum module and it work very well. You can also synchronize your Drupal site with phpbb and Vbb forum
