Whats the best choice for free photo editing program?

Yea Gimp is great, just be ready to spend a few hrs on the learning curve and u will be all set for basic stuff, and some layering and effects

3rd for gimp.

I'll probably catch crap for this... but maybe also look at Paint.net (not MS Paint). It's pretty easy to use (not nearly the learning curve) for basic stuff. It's not a high-end photo editor... but it does most of the basic stuff well. And it's free and easy-to-use.

Yeah, Gimp is very good, it has all the basic features of photoshop and for basic editing it's all you need.

I use gimp all the time. Even when creating animated gif files.

GIMP has a plugin to make its interface become of photoshop. Only the hotkeys are different

I got Photoshop CS5 last week along with dreamwever and I have already made a stunning looking site, bit pricey but does well :)

Same as everyone else says, GIMP is the open source equivalent of PhotoShop. If you can't get PS for whatever reason then GIMP is the next best choice.

Gimp rival PS. You will need to learn how to use it. If you used any photo editing software before then you already have the basics to start working.
There is an awesome website where you can get all the video tutorial for gimp and is the website I used to train myself to do so impressive images.
Here is the link meetthegimp (dot) org check it out.

if you chose to get a "free" version of PS also get lynda videos on howto PS. The little things they will teach you are great, also youtube tutorials for PS.

i thought all Photo editing software was free :)

But, If my Grandma asked me or a client .. then I might say GIMP, although many have trouble learning it, you can make Gimp look more like photoshop with the gimpshop plugin.

Gimpshop

Like the above poster, I have to give a shout to paint.net, if your trying to make some simple website banners and ads you can figure it out real quick with paint.net.

I have been using photoshop since 1998 and would still have no problem suggesting that a new user give paint.net a try

Picnik isnt terrible for an online photo editor either

Like all the others say, if it NEEDS to be free then GIMP is the way to go.

But if you're not averse to using torrents, then I'd recommend Photoshop CS5 for photo editing, and Fireworks CS5 if it's for general web stuff.

For paid software you can go for Photoshop and for free version you can opt GIMP, but layering dosen't work in GIMP

GIMP is the only free choice, it's not that good though. Better to just pirate Photoshop.
