The first thing I check is whether the important pages are actually being indexed. If a page is not indexed, it does not matter how good the content or backlinks are. After that, I look at crawl errors, robots.txt, and sitemap issues to make sure search engines can access the website properly.

I usually check indexing first because if Google cant crawl the pages, other SEO work wont help much.
