What's important in hosting for high traffic?

Is it the RAM? CPU? I'm not into the technical aspects of building web properties.

I want to try some pop traffic for one of my landers, but as you know the traffic is very high, probably thousands per hour. I tried it a little bit but the site crashed as my shared hosting could not handle it. What is a good cheap hosting provider/plan you use for popup traffic? This is only for testing purposes so I'm not looking to spend a lot right away.

Shared hosting isn't suitable, you need your own server , either managed or self managed.
Speak to hosting companies and tell the what sort of traffic you are experiencing, what type of site you're running and if it's built with WP, Joomla or whatever.

Pointless having a great converting offer on a great looking site if shitty shared hosting is crashing.
 
If shared hosting doesn't cut it for you (obviously), you should get a dedicated server. The stronger the better as if your traffic is going to increase, you'll have to upgrade to the best they have eventually.

Agreed. If you anticipate an large amount of traffic, having too much in terms of an server or hosting is better than having too little. Take the time and do the research on a webhosting company. See how they respond to your questions :)
 
Shared hosting is big NO NO for websites with high traffic.
In regards to resources, both CPU and RAM are important , you can't take one over the other, especially with WordPress
When you pick your VPS plan , pay attention on the actually CPU speeds. Most hosting providers are not mentioning it and you may end with 1.5Ghz single or multi core (which are way off 3.5Ghz for example ).

Also would strongly recommend the storage to be ALL SSD and only.

OVH is cheap and can handle with high traffic on their dedicated servers, they is a must go. I'm sure you will find a good dedicated server cheap in them, and they have good firewall with Anti-DDoS. That will minimize the risks of your website being ddosed.
 
Most shared hosting porviders are not going to work for large traffic sites as most run could linux and your resources are going to be limited. If you are on a budget then you could look at starting with a KVM VPS, Then as your site grows then you can bump the resources that you use. Then you can make plans to jump to a full dedicated server.
 
I suggest you buy ssd space hosting to fast uptime. And use dedicated server at least of 2GB-3GB RAM.
 
You should get high RAM packages from any hosting server and also CPU.
