Hey guys,

Looking over a competitors site right now who has low DA/PA and poor SEO.

When looking at their backlinks I noticed something weird, they have 1 backlink showing on my normal tools, however when I use ahrefs it shows one backlink that's using a redirect and then it says a total backlinks of 1,479?

Am I missing something pretty easy here, how can you have 1 backlink to your site and Ahrefs says a total of over 1400+? Are the other backlinks flowing through that 1 backlink? Hope this isn't a stupid question lol.

Here's a screenshot:

Cheers guys!

That is over 1000 backlinks pointing from 1 domain. Chance is they are using sitewide links or something like that.

Yeah I see that now actually, 1 referring domain with over 1400 backlinks.

Is this effective? From what I see they have terrible SEO right now in terms of on-page and don't rank for anything. The site that is pointing the 1400 backlinks seems to be down as well.

It is not a good SEO practice and not the safest way. But big brands do it all the time and I still see sites ranking with this techniques so what do I know :)

Glenn explained this technique here:

Yeah it's a sitewide link, probably from the menu.

Thanks for the help lads, and great article. Kinda crazy how they started that site within 6 weeks.

So just want to make sure I have this straight, the people who are doing the SEO for this website are using a sitewide link coming from 1 domain. Since this "backlink" is on the footer/menu/scrollbar/wherever it appears on every page of the other site, so the target website receives over 1400 backlinks (is this over 1400 different pages??)

Am I on the right track here?

Yeah but dont consider those 1400 links to be worth as much as 1400 links from unique domains..

Okay gotcha. Yeah seems like a pretty lame strategy for this site if it's their only backlink, and it's clearly not working right now. Need more diversity.

Thanks for the clarification! I think I got the concept now

I definitely would not suggest this. It sounds like a strategy 10 years old.

I can hardly imagine he benefits in any way from this.
