What's a good open source social networking script?

Hey gang

I know there are several open source social networking scripts out there, but which one is the easiest to customize?

I'm wanting to build a niche social networking site, but skim down a lot of the features of an existing script, and add a couple features of my own. So, the open source script can be a pretty simple social networking script.

The big thing for me is being able to redesign the layouts designs of the pages for the site.

Any help is much appreciated.

I would use joomla, and the community builder componet. there are tons of themes for it too.

With joomla is it easy to add/edit profile layouts and profile information fields?

Elgg.org Every time. It's modukle based and a bit like facebook.
