One of my hard disks is playing up big time and im trying to get everything off it before it goes totally.

Any good software (preferably free) that can help with this? Ive tried a few things but they seem to be more for restoring deleted files than the issues im having (very slow read rate and hangs "msdos error")

Try Recuva. Free and powerful with good user experience.
It's from the same company who produced CCleaner.

PM me your email mate - 'll send you a copy with a serial when i go home...

Clonezilla?
It is not intended for this purpose but it copies you HDD. In full....

great. thanks for all the suggestions ive got a few to try tomorrow now.
thanks again and fingers crossed :)

One more suggestion: Get a Linux live CD and run your computer from that.
The more you use the HDD the faster it will fail. A live CD like Mint, Ubuntu, Puppy or any other will not need a HDD so you don't cause additional damage while saving your data.

Good luck. :)

I use GetDataBack for NTFS
It can recover alot from even 5 formats ago.
