So as the title says, if you was to purchase a hosting account what would you be looking for in terms of hardware, software, support?

When purchasing a hosting account, I would look for the following things:

Hardware:
A high level of reliability and uptime
Sufficient memory to handle high traffic and fast processors
Adequate storage space for my website and any additional databases or files

Software:
User friendly Control Panel
Support for email hosting, if needed
Automatic backups and disaster recovery
Support for the programming languages and frameworks.

Support:
24/7 customer support with a quick response.
Knowledgeable and friendly staff who can assist with any technical issues.

Only three things uptime, fast server and reliable support (If you dont have root access or your not technical).

I am using OVH, they got fast servers and good uptime and non existing support. I am happy. Its hard to get all three together.

Reliance 24/7 Support is the key for me along with the server health and uptime!

While choosing the hosting provider , I will look:
  • Server reliability
  • uptime
  • what type of security offered
  • about their disaster recovery plan
  • frequency of backup
  • technical support offered by them

I am very much concerned about the speed of the customer support of a hosting company because I have to manage many sites at once. If the response time of the support is very big then my work suffers and is delayed a lot.

Hence I always prefer a hosting company who has a 24x7 LIVE chat support.

Other important things like server configurations and uptime, etc. are important indeed, but customer support is of utmost importance in my opinion.

I think if you feel comfortable to be with certain provider (it terms of price, set of services and addons, support, customer service, payment options etc) that is enough and means that you are with a right company.
Just define key features of the provider for yoursef and payattention or ask about them while sign up for the company.

It depends on my hosting needs for that specific project. Stability and Speed are the most essentials. without both of them being the best, you will find yourself meeting their support team quickly.

I would recommend not paying for a year in advance, rather monthly and have the option to eject anytime.

actually depends that which type of hosting you are looking for, like shared or VPS or dedicated and onshore or offshore, still a good 24/7/365 support can be a must for any hosting, as with hosting you need your provider to be there for you 24/7/365.

pretty basic from me

1. servers stay online, virtually no downtime
2. customer service who respond quickly and accurately

it's very hard to find 2.
