Hey, I opened a business bank account not too long ago, already told them everything that was needed. But apparently today I get a call saying I have to call them to tell them the specific nature of my business or 'my account could be closed.' wtf? I alreayd gave them that information.

But what would you classify everything we do to a bank? lol. from this, to freelancing (services). I told them 'advertising' at first. Maybe I should just say freelance. but I dont think that classifies as a business then. I told her in general "Online Media" but apparently thats not flying.

I guess tell them that this is internet business. I think that would work.

I did but they need it to be more specific, as in what I do. an internet business can do anything.

Tell them you write websites and software / scripts in hope of gaining a commission through a sale. If they ask the nature of the sale, tell them ipods, psp, etc.. just be honest. It's not like your doing anything illegal.

I described my business as internet marketing specialists. Told them I specialized in online marketing for businesses. They were happy with that answer.

Internet Marketing Consultant always sounds good and is fairly vague and all encompassing.

Cool Ill try these.

"Consultant" always works when you can't come up with anything else.

Opening a new bank account (even when you have an established relationship already) is starting to feel like some sort of interogation after 9/11, doesn't it? Crazy.

Tell them the exact details of how you specifically conduct business is proprietary information that you do not readily hand out. You do work as a webmaster, and freelance market consultant. You make your money off of commission from large and small business based on the specific needs of your clients. If they ask for more specifics, tell them this includes product and website endorsement/promotion both on and off line (from website ad publishing and optimization, to street crew and word of mouth advertisements for various markets, products, and services).

Basically, paint them a detailed picture that isn't exactly false, but that bends the truth, and omits the less than savory details. They want your business, the just want to be put at ease.

Tell them to kiss your ass, they don't need to know the details of the business you do. Tell them your company does internet marketing. The end. If that doesn't work.. tell them to close your account and give you your cash and take your business to a bank who doesn't care about the intricacies of your business model(s), just the fact that your money is kept with them. BofA, Wells Fargo/Wachovia, suntrust, etc. I have both BofA and Wach and they've never asked what is involved with the business and I've been dumping cash into that account for awhile now.

When I opened my business accounts, I not only told them what I was selling, I made them sit through a pitch of my own! Didn't make a sale, but it was fun to watch the bank's manager/saleswoman try to figure out how to handle being on the receiving end of a sales effort.

The key to keeping specific info to yourself is to NOT be brief. Be windy, as if you're being paid $1 for every word you say. Then just let the filler material spew forth, as if it will never end.

The bank's branch manager did make the mistake of asking for details. I proceeded to bore her to tears with the history of online marketing, my excitement about how the net has grown since its commercialization, how Google works, and other such topics which in actuality hold zero interest to a career banker. I made sure to act excited--as if, given the chance, I could go on about it for hours. Incredibly boring hours.

She soon cut me off and approved the account--before I gave out anything close to proprietary information. Closest I got to specifics was "I look at what brands my competitor has."

Internet Marketing.
Market things, your own products, products from best buy, amazon, ect on the internet.

That should work.
