Looking to make my very first niche site, currently looking up a domain. The one im looking to buy is not available :( so what would be the next best option?

Example.

FoodKing.com Taken

Would you go for

FoodKing.org

or

Food-king.com

If you're not going to build a brand then .com is not really necessary, although its nice to have it on your domain.

Alternative when .com is not available.

You can use either .net or .org, or even .info and .biz if your really want the Exact Match Domain (EMD).

Hyphenated domains can rank as well as non-hyphenated domains. This is also a great alternative if the non-hyphenated .com domain is not available.

Personnaly when i don't find .com i take the .net, if not available .org

i don't really like .org, so if .com's taken and so is .net, i try and think of something else to call it, where i can have a .com or .net. i don't like hyphens either.

but that's just me!

go the .org or .net

hyphen does not count as a EMD + looks spammy

I prefer org over net if both are available most of the time depending on the niche

If .com is not available then I go for .net then .org. Search engines treat them pretty much the same. Rarely I go for hyphenated .coms but they have also proven to do the trick.

Ok cheers for the help!

Ben

I go for the .net or .org - and, if necessary, i put a hyphen in it

if .com is taken then .org or .net work very well...they do sound like offcial domain to that keyword..
and also it comes to EMD category.. no problem with that

Its an example. Nothing related to food what so ever.

.net or .org, if possible w/o hyphens... the hyphens don't really matter in G, as long you're not trying to build a brand and get type-ins.

I would prefer finding a .com domain. If not the I would go to .net and it is really unlikely I would go for the .org or .info

You can let this thread die now. Decided to go for the .org that was available.
