My predicion is that there will be more government oversight (restriction) on everything and China will be seen as the bastion of internet freedom because the US government cannot regulate what they host.

"China" and "freedom" in the same sentence...LOL...Add in "Bastion" and now I'm really LMFAO...I think you woke up on the paranoid side of the bed today but it's all good.

The next "big" thing will be LEGAL AND REGULATED online gaming in the U.S. :cool:
 
We must not forget that Facebook was not a NEXT BIG THING.

Social has been around since day one in many forms.

Facebook was basically the best (because it was clean & simple) at a time when internet was growing rapidly (with the advent of smartphones). The Facebook of today could easily have been Bebo, Myspace etc

So, I don't think there'll be a game changer or the emergence of a major player, just a transition to HTML5. The sites that don't act will be left behind.

Web 2.0 sites like Pinterest, tumblr etc will come and go. And be replaced by more innovative sites.

I believe this + the mobile, ubiquitous web + custom tailored experience is where the internet is heading as a whole. With this combo, there will be no need for rfid implants, nor will internet be a threat anymore to the powers that be, but an ally. An isolated, customized and intrusive internet experience.

I think Semantic Web extends *way* beyond search. Think like more evolved version of Outbrain, or social sharing (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook all use 'top stories' in some way) but targeting specifically user tendencies, behaviours, psychographics etc.

With further evolution of n-grams, push button news technology I think the next big thing could be a news service that can rewrite articles etc based on a persons preference of a writer's style. Articles that can automatically detect a user and direct them to a version that can be for ,say, a conservative mother; playing on their emotional needs, improving click-through rates, improving the experience for a user.

Yes, it's an interesting philosophical idea on what we are becoming in regards to the information we absorb and how we are stifling our own growth.

Mobile, but I also think some serious disrupting needs to happen in the cable tv industry. Damn restriction wont let me post a link to the article about apple pursuing this. Its on MacRumors a couple pages back if anyone cares enough to read about it.

Maybe not 100% related to the topic but here is some news that is an example of the future of marketing....

British Airways start to search their clients on the web and social network to find their birthday, loved places, favorite food/drinks, favorite places to offer a better experience...

Here is what I was talking about when I said about social search engine....
 
It doesn't really matter what the next big thing is, google will come along a year later and swallow it up.
 
I think the next big thing that will hit the internet will be the ability to like project consiousness onto the internet..sort of like the matrix:D..but thats most probably like 100 or 200 years from now...
