I find it surprising that noone so far brought up ixwebhosting, they have currently a very neat plan which is about 8 USD/month now (instead of 13 USD) and it includes 15 DEDlCATED IPs and 3 free domain registrations.

I recommend host gator. It's fast, stable & not expensive. The customer support can fix any problems for me.

Does anyone know some good hosting companies that don't charge upfront ?I want to pay on a monthly basis not for the whole year,I can't afford that.

Officially no one tolerates crap. You can get booted, warned or the whole thing ignored for anything or for no reason. It depends on the person that will handle the complaint, if he's in a good mood, if his kid is sick whatever. Guessing is all you are going to get as an answer.

Of course you can always say in your defence that it was the competition.

I have been using Hostgator for years. I haven't used it for *much* blackhat with intense link building recently, but I've done enough experiments that should have gotten complaints and they still ignore them. There's nothing illegal about link spamming and so many people do it to some degree that they just ignore it. It's no risk to them.

It's great if you are just starting out because you can get a 30 day free trial. If you have one site after that, it's a few bucks a month. If you want to host more sites, a major advantage it has is that for only a few bucks more a month you can get unlimited domains and subdomains.

The virtual plans are very, very reasonable and if you do exhaust your limits and need a server you can stay with them and make it easy on yourself.

Another thing about them. They're enormous. You can find a ton of cheap hosting offers out there but it's generally a good idea to stay away from them. If some mom and pop shop runs into trouble, you don't want them to be sitting there not knowing what to do while your traffic goes nowhere and your rankings drop. I have only run into one serious technical problem with them and it was a very obscure thing I actually helped them fix. Still, I was impressed that there were people there who could actually diagnose and fix something that they couldn't just look up in some manual.

Another big thing is security. You need your host to have a top notch security staff working all the time. Everything has to be updated and you know that some of these bargain hosts just don't have the resources to do that because it's one of the more expensive aspects of running a hosting company and it's something that people tend to ignore until it screws them over. I had a client that insisted on using cheap hosting from someone local for their site. Their servers got hacked and our website got defaced. They had absolutely no security knowledge and told me I must have done something wrong... on a static HTML website... Again I'm left to do their work for them securing a server they're selling space on for the sake of keeping my client happy.

TL;DR - Hostgator is great especially if you're starting small, link spamming isn't a big problem because it's not illegal and barely anyone cares and you should avoid bargain no name web hosts at all costs.

You are always better off running your own servers.

You can get a dedicated server starting at about $50 a month for a decent one. Just don't send too much traffic to it

But you can start from there and when you have the budget, you expand.

I use Liquidweb (Storm on demand) private server. Not cheap but support is the best I've ever had. Easy to increase resources (Memory . CPU and Disk) one click and it's done. You pay daily so any increase in demand you can increase resources then drop back and only pay daily. Easy to add extra IP's and again you pay monthly.

You can create an image of any server and then clone it in about 5 mins.

IMO sometimes you get what you pay for.
