I am buying a product, cash, at a really good price. And the seller sends me an invoice, via email with a company name and price and quantity and that is all. Is this still a valid invoice? I want to make sure everything is legit because I am getting a really good product at really good prices! So my question is what validates an invoice?

Invoices are accounting tools, they track purchases and sales. It's a way of looking at exactly what you'll be paying and for what, as well as providing other info about the order and payment. It can be seen to the precursor of a receipt.

Are you skeptical of the store you're buying from? Do they not seem authentic?

If you're that worried ask for a contract not an invoice. These are two very different instruments. A contract is enforceable and an invoice isn't.

If I write you an invoice on the back of an envelope and sign it thats a valid invoice.

I would only be querying an invoice if the company was showing tax seperately...ie GST/VAT and I somehow doubted they were in a position to do that. In which case I would want to know their vat number or clearance cert

Are you questioning the validity because it came via email or because of the invoice itself?

The fact it came through email doesn't matter at all.

On top of the information you gave it should also include a business registration number.

Exactly its not a store I meet him on craigslist and now I am buying lots of product and getting invoices but I search the business info he gave me and I can not find a business with that name. We always meet up in a public spot and I pay cash and he gives me the product. It is somewhat sketchy and that is why I am afraid this might not be a legit invoice. All I have is a Business name that I can not find googling.

You meet a strange guy in a public location and hand over cash for very cheap goods.

And your main concern is whether the invoice is legitimate?

That is the whole thing, I am trying to verify his business and make sure the products are legitmate. This is why I am asking what do I need to get from him to make sure everything is legitimate? I do not want to deal with products that are stolen or anything of this sort, unless I can make sure it all checks out. So what do I need to get from him?

Yeah its basically like that. What I am guessing is that he has a contract with the company, buys it at discount and then resale it to me cash so he doesn't get in trouble for resale. This is a high demand product that is hard to get and I am fairly sure he has a legit company. Thanks I will stop doing business with him.
