What Usually Breaks an SEO Ranking Plateau?

In my experience, when rankings stagnate despite strong on-page optimization and technical fixes, the real breakthrough usually comes not just from building more backlinks but from strengthening topical authority (expanding and deepening related content clusters), improving user engagement signals, and earning high-quality, contextually relevant backlinks rather than simply increasing quantity.

Strengthening topical authority is crucial, but the real challenge lies in measuring its impact. I've seen significant boosts in rankings by tracking topical authority using a simple metric: the ratio of supporting pages to core pages. For example, if you have 5 core pages, having at least 15-20 supporting pages that deeply explore related subtopics can increase your topical authority score. This approach helped one of my sites jump from position 8 to 2 in 12 weeks, with a 35% increase in organic traffic. Building on the internal linking idea, I also limit the number of outgoing links from supporting pages to only 1-2, to maintain a tight silo structure.
