What to use for link diversity?

I normally do white hat but going to have to give pbns another go after reading this site so questions..

Can I just use my own dedicated pbns?

If not then what other sorts of links am I supposed to use? I don't really want to use web 2.0s, don't think they're worth the cost with hand written content.
Don't want to be sending profile links to inner pages.
so...?
