Not sure if it has any advantage for backlinks, but you can use it to receive free amazon prime membership
Most blog owners are likely to approve your blog comments when you use a .edu email. You may also try running CPA offers in the education niche like student deals etc. and comment on other education/college related blogs. If you use it effectively, you may gain a lot of traffic via blog commenting.

Are there not .edu blogs that only take @edu emails that I could build backlinks with? Hmm unfortunately because I live in australia it is a .edu.au.
