I think you should do the on-page SEO before publishing the article, not after. It's probably not a big of a deal, but it's the normal way of doing it
Anyway, many tools nowadays will tell you how to optimize your content, such as RankMath, Yoast, Frase, SurferSEO, NeuronWriter, etc... even some SEO tools like Keysearch I know have this option, so you don't have to stress about it, just follow their recommendations and you should be good.

So after the publishing the article, I focus on optimizing the meta title tags, descriptions, and header tags with relevant keywords. I work on internal linking of the content which is crucial. I make sure proper Image Alt tags are added and the URL structure is optimized. And pay attention to user experience, which involves content readability, loading speed, and mobile friendliness.

Use tools like surferSEO, and Marketmuse to optimize the content relevant to your keywords. Check the meta description and add images/videos if you found useful after publishing.

You can make sure that the articles are structured with proper headings and make the articles easy to read. Optimize the images to improve the loading speed and include the keywords in the filenames. Add proper internal links to the relevant articles, if possible add external links to articles relevant to your topic published on authority websites, make sure the pages are mobile friendly, and load faster.

After publishing, you can do what you missed in on-page before publishing... you might have published the article with preliminary research of keywords and topic but after getting it published, you can monitor how it is performing, on what search keywords it is ranking better, and which keywords are more fruitful and accordingly you can optimize your page accordingly. On-page is also not one time work, you need to make modifications when necessary.
