So today I decided to go on ahrefs and just for fun check backlinks for a site that I haven't touched in a couple of months and to my surprise I see 1.8K backlins added since September 1st. I am a total noob in SEO so I have to ask, how could something like this happen?

Um people found your site some how and linked to it? It does happen every now and then.

Some directories will over backlink your site. I had to disavow tons of them from a few sites.

These are actually high quality backlinks with great contents. A lot of them have pictures in the web 2.0.
 
Is it spun / duplicate content? Either someone is hitting your site or you are getting linked to legitimately, but it seems like way too many links to be legitimate. =
 
If the backlinks are good quality then there's nothing to worry about. Otherwise you might be a victim of someone doing negative SEO to you.
 
It could just be a site wide link, many services count that as thousands of links. So you can have a single backlinks on a site with 100,000 pages and it counts that as 100,000 backlinks even though it's really only 1. I prefer to go by referring domain count. As it's unique links that really count the most.
 
On Ahrefs, go to ahrefs.com/site-explorer/refdomains/subdomains/YOURDOMAIN.COM

See the "Backlinks count" column to see where the major volume is coming from. Generally what happens is that ahrefs double counts links, so saying you have a url on a blog post or forum, a lot of time individual comments will have their own unique url and you might get 30 links from the same post etc.

It's not a big issue, duplicate content is generally adjusted for by Google and it's not a good nor bad thing; just means the data isn't truly representative on how Search Engines value those same links.
 
where are the links coming from and how were you getting traffic to your site?
