what stop people from ruining other sites?

What's stopping you for opening crappy threads? You have the answer now I guess.

Why should google care?

As long as there are 10 non-spammy sites on the front page, it doesn't matter that some more quality sites got ****ed by a douchebag spammer.

This is not an ethics game, google is as blackhat as the neg-seo-ers. If you don't like the game don't play it.

As for me on of the few things I wouldn't do in SEO for moral reasons is indeed neg SEO. However I still think it is not as bad as promoting pharma products to people who don't need them, which is considered normal amongst IM-ers for some reason :/

Negative SEO has been known to backfire. I've heard of some cases where negative SEO either did nothing at all or even helped their competitor rank. Your competitor could also just disavow the links if they know how to properly use the disavow tool. Because of all of these factors, most people do not believe negative SEO is worth their time or money.

Negative SEO only affects small sites. Any site that has trust from authority links can never be taken down. Not the type authority links most people assume here.

Agree with John... try to spam CNN or BBC... it's impossible

I don't think negative SEO is usually used in that way. I think people here do it in a very small scale to evaluate services they would like to buy in order to rank their own site.
People need to figure out the sweet spot when a website starts to move to a better position. Small scale to not ruin the webmasters they are targeting.
I assume you need a list of websites with different age and many duplicate ages. Then you start to add a few backlinks divided among them. Then you monitor the sites
that are moving and figure out why certain sites move so fast and why other doesn't move at all. You do very little harm that way.
I have not done this yet but I'm considering it if I would start to try out SEO again.

Its not easy to Tank a solid site that has been around for 1 year +.

that wasnt my question...what im asking is why would google make it so easy for people to ruin others

thats all l

Because no system is perfect. It's a big flaw and there's no effective way to stop that. Also, neg-seo now has much more effective ways and without leaving so many traces.

Work Ethics. If you don't want someone to do it to you then why do it to them?

If you have the time and resources to put others down instead of ranking your own stuff, you may well do that.
