What SpyWare/AdWare/Virus/Trojan/MalWare/Worm program to get?

Got a computer, heard McAfee and Norton are BAD programs to get because they EAT A LOT of RAM!

What are your suggestions?

Something small, simple, and takes care of things.

ALSO A SECOND QUESTION
Anyone use a Seedbox? Is it only for torrents or anything? As in.. if I get a seedbox, and lets say there is an mp3 that i want to download, so i can right click on it and not chose "save as" but click on "save to seedbox" or something...?

avast is good and free, microsoft essentials is also good. and also free. GL
 
Many people suggest kaspersky. I have used avg free for long time withot problems.

Seedbox is just a vps / server often with torrent client script with web UI where you can load torrents into. Then you have the files on server and you need download them with ftp most of the time.
 
Get (eset) Nod 32 and match it with Malwarebytes and forget. I have never been infected and I have run literally millions of urls through SB exposing my systems to all sorts of stuff and have never once been infected. Nod 32 has never missed an in the wild virus.

Currently Nod has blocked about 8,000 attacks on my system. That's REALLY high but it's because I use all my SEO software on here to search the web for things. I just have the antivirus protection too, not the firewall edition.

It's also the lightest on resources I have ever used and I've used, avast, avg, norton, kaspersky, comodo, McAfee.

Just use the two programs I've mentioned and you won't need anymore.

Run all suspicious apps like keygens/cracks/patches in a sandboxie/virtual machine and you'll be safe. If you're paranoid you can clone your OS and use that inside a virtual machine and run all the software there. I haven't used a antivirus software in more than 5 years and haven't caught a single virus/worm/whatever. From time to time I boot AVG Rescue CD and scan the machine for rootkits, but still haven't found one.
 
ESET is a good choice... I have used it before I upgraded my system.
Now I am using Kaspersky witch is also great.
I recommend one of this 2
 
I thought this thread was going to be about adware programs that make you money.


My favourite program to use is Microsoft Security Essentials and it works great.
 
Nod32 is great, but for a price effective option (free), I would suggest Avast Antivirus. There is a paid version but you do not need the extra functions that are provided with the paid version. If you feel you would rather have the protection the program either way is cheap (sub 30.00). No matter what protection you decide upon I would suggest running manual scans for both spyware and viruses at least once a week. I have used the free version of Avast for a few years now with great results, most of my clients use the same software. Within reason there isn't one better than the other. The problem with Norton/Kaspersky and some others is they throw a bunch of other modules into the mix that can eat up system resources very quickly. You can always run scans through Spybot Search and Destroy and also Adaware. They have a live module that will run in your system tray and look at catching potential threats.
