It can. Take my word for it.
I had a Galaxy S3 before I moved to iPhone 5S. The battery life is pretty god for a phone with these specs. I'm always running a couple of apps (skype, viber, wifi and cellular data on) and am out in the sun most of the time so the brightness is set to a high level by auto brightness and the phone easily makes through a day without running any power saving apps or anything.
Here's a tip. When you get your iPhone out of the box, drain the battery to 0%. Charge it to 100% and then try to keep your battery north of 30%. Give it a charge every now and then. These Li-ion batteries like getting re-charged every once in a while. Also, don't leave your phone plugged in after the battery is fully charged.
Currently a shitty ZTE Kis, and all i love about him is the battery live. 5days with calls only, heavy usage one and a half day.
After i buy a new laptop, my next savings will be for either Nexus5 or some other Android smartphone.
