Hi,

I am going to move to US next year and decide to change my career. I got PhD degree in Biochemistry but I love to work in IT field.

So please suggest me what I should study to get a job related to IT which can bring me a 6 figure salary.

Thanks for your input. :)

There is a lesson for all of you bhw kids, go to school get a phd and earn less than 6 figure salary, or take a big risk and see where IM leads you.

You can study Cisco and get certified. CCIE gets 6 figs but takes a while.
Or, Study this forum as much as you studied for your Ph.D, take action and sky's the limit.

Hope that helps.

If you have a PhD in Biochem, then you are already set my friend, you can teach at a university and get 6 figures easily, why would you want to study something else?

Completely agree with you. It hardly takes 1-2 years for this.

If you've got a PhD in bio-chem and can't get a 6 figure salary, then you're not going to have much luck doing anything else...

Six-figure salaries in Biochemistry aren't as common as one might imagine (given the level of expertise of the graduate).

That being said, my dad has a Ph.D in biochemistry and is making six figures, but overall I believe what I say still holds true.

Certainly easier than many other professions, but it isn't what most people think.

To the OP,

Come to America and use your education to get citizenship/sponsorship. If you PM me some details with qualifications, I'll have a chat with my father and perhaps the company he works for has some room/need.

best of luck

Why don't you start an IT business then and go full time into IM..

A mate of mine actually did it in less than a year, along with full time work. However I think that he was very much the exception to the rule.

SAP used to be the easy way to 6 figures plus, however that "feels" as though it may change.

First year though, keep dreaming. It is all about your experience, I have interviewed heaps of people who have various degrees and qualifications but have no clue about how things work in the real world.

Work out what area of IT you want to go into and then get the specific industry certifications for that area.

For example, if you want to be a Project Manager then you would get something like Prince certification.

Many certifications will also require actual work experience. Using the project management example again you will need to be working in projects for 2 years or more before you can be granted some certs.

One thing to keep in mind though is the REAL threat of off shoring. I have worked at a couple of the biggest IT companies and more and more work is being sent off to India and the Phillippines for the cheaper labor.

Find the roles that are harder to offshore to keep yourself safe in the long term. This means find something that is customer facing rather than a network or server tech.

Best BHW post in a long time

Now read this post closely OP first thank the dude then follow up with him about his support for you

You are almost certainly in the fortunate minority to have a Ph.D in biochemistry and if I were you I would not waste opportunities that come to my door to make bank!

Man, with that kinda qualification - you are already going to make a killing.

how about you make a site or [journal for biochemistry] and archive all papers written on the subject and other relevant topics.. Keep up with current events and breakthroughs as well. Monetize through cpa/banners, adsense, sell ad space, etc .. If you want you can flip the site and sell it to some organization down the road... just a thought

studying is a bullsh*t I'm civil engineer and got job for $300/month working 6 days in a
week ! I'm full time IM now ... forget salaries make your own business .....

I know this will sound like I am beating a dead horse, but do not be so quick to assume scientists/Ph.Ds are high paying professions.

I'm kind of feeling deja vu because my MOTHER also has a Ph.D in Food sciences/agriculture and makes 6 figures, but (big but) there is a huge joke in the scientific community about being able to earn a lot of money compared to the amount of knowledge accumulated and years of schooling completed.

Yes, there are definitely great 6 figure jobs out there, but both of my parents are mid 40's so they have been at their jobs/have experience for many years. Not only that, but they are also quite lucky - there are plenty of qualified Ph.Ds that will most likely get $65k-90k, but don't be bidazzled into thinking PhD = lots of money.

I say this to save people time and heartache. Study biochemistry/whatever until the PhD level because you like it and are passionate about it. Don't do it with the expectation that you'll finish 9-12 years of school and make 6 figures.

private sector doctors make serious bank however, maybe bioinformatics could interesting to move to but not 6 figures straight away, u can make loads in the financial sector too quite fast :)

Become an entrepreneur ;)
Online or offline business, IMO thats the way to go! Ofcourse it has its own risks but if you have the dedication and motivation, you can pull it through.
I am a college student and i got placed in a good company but i know that if i join there, i would be busting my ass for 8hours and my boss would be riding a BMW.
Instead i think its wise to put all my efforts in growing my own business!
