Well, if you aren't TOO concerned about that site then it should be ok.

Also just a note, a lot of "SEO Companies" outsource their work to freelancers. The SEO Company makes the sale, the freelancer does the work. So it may not even be that company doing the spamming. They might not have a clue whats going on. I do freelance work for SEO companies and they don't care how I get the rankings as long as I get them.

Fix the holes in your website first. Even if you manage to deal with him somebody else will come and start posting links. What about if some russian viagra spammer finds your website ? What are you gonna do then ? Security flaws will destroy your business. Fix your website first.

So far this is the only thing that gives me pause. My anger just doesn't seem worth it after reading this. I'll carefully consider it.

Update: I've considered it, and suppose this had been my money site, and his tinkering had had an effect on my ranking or my CTR. He didn't seem to care that I might not be able to pay my bills, so I'll afford him the same courtesy.

If the guy sees this thread and PM's me, that will satisfy me. If that fails I'll try to contact him. If there's no response, I'll scare the hell out of his clients.

Do what the mafia used to do. You have evidence now that he is illegally injecting links on to your site. You have contact information for each of his clients. You have the ability to take away his livlihood.

So contact him and tell him that you have this, and you want a cut of his profits or you make his clients go poof. Life is harsh sometimes.
 
If someone wants to take over SEO clients from another company, I can't think of a better way of doing it than to take a list of his clients and illegally hacking/injecting those clients into other people's websites and having the hacked people complain to the advertisers. They'll drop their first SEO guy instantly. Then the competitor comes in and woos them to use them instead.

So maybe by complaining to these companies, you're doing exactly what some hacker SEO guy wants you to do -- you do all the dirty work of destroying the client relationships for him.

Just saying that is a possibility. Another possibility is that he's injecting innocent links in with the guilty links so to send you on a wild goose chase hunting down people who have no clue or involvement.
 
One more thing -- your site was compromised once and the only thing you did was re-edit the pages to take the injected links back out (the first time around)?

Your proper response should have been "OMG my CMS is compromised, my plugins are compromised, my host is compromised -- I need to move my site, research each of my plugins for vulnerabilities". That's part of your task list and responsibilities if you ever expect to be successful doing what you're doing.
 
Call his client and bitch about "illegal hacking".

Trust me, I was spamming for a client and someone went through 2 buffer sites to a review site and then found a link in the footer there which went to a site with their contact info on the whois, called and said I was spamming them "illegally". Lost that client quick like! Most clients are NOT web proficient tell them he's hacking you and its illegal and make an empty threat or two.

Guys, thanks for the comments and information. As you can see, this is an important set of decisions I have to make, and I keep changing my mind as I hear more and various comments and scenarios. I'm a person who likes to have lots of counsel before I do something although my personality is first and foremost that of a hothead. So thanks for cooling me down(or firing me up, as the case may be) and giving me some very important things to consider.

No, I also strengthened my WP password because I thought he'd gained access through "brute force" cracking. I admit I wasn't too concerned at first so I just made a hugely long password. Obviously that wasn't how he got in so I'm still working on hardening the site.
 
Just forget about this guy - as said previously, he has probably out sourced his Seo and knows nothing about you or your site.

My advise is fix your site, properly - strong passwords, disable any unnecessary plugins, update, check perms, you know the drill.

Think about it this way - few compromised pages, you harden your site and you never have the problem again - so this guy has sort of done you a favour;)
 
I'd contact the guy directly, ask him to stop and threaten legal action. If he doesn't stop go to his clients directly, in the mean time, try and secure your site.
 
may be i m kind enuf or what, but ruining somone's business isnt a great idea. contact him directly and talk to him, if he takes it to a new level then everything is fair in love, war and internet marketing ;)
 
I think it may come from a plugin: maybe a cracked plugin from here? check the code in extensions -> modify, check the plugin's rating/reviews in wordpress -> extensions.
 
I'm glad I made this thread before i did anything rash. I myself know how to scan for vulnerable "dorks"(scripts) on a given site and inject SQL trash to take a site down but apparently who ever did this to me is a bit more deft in his skill. I'll just fix my site and forget it unless it happens that I can't keep him out. Then I guess it's all out war. Hopefully it won't come to that. Again, thanks to everybody for your valuable input.
 
Are you really sure that it was him? What if it was one of his competitors or someone that he outsources to?

How can you be certain that he was directly responsible?
 
I don't think making enemies is the solution. If you ruin his business he will definitely come after you.. find out what your blogs are and do the same thing. You don't need to show that you are the big guy.. you should contact him and advice him not to do it again.
As for suing his clients.. :) i hope you didn't really take it serious.. You can pretend to threaten his clients and most likely they will get scared, but in reality there is no way you can prove they are guilty. They might not even have a written contract with this SEO guy.
