It works in a same way as All-in-One-SEO noindex options (e.g.: "Use noindex for Archives", "Use noindex for Tag Archives" etc.) But using of robots.txt is preferentially because it doesn't slow down the site.

I think Easy WP SEO can be helpful even if you know what you're doing because it can catch simple mistakes. For example, if you underline your keyword but miss out the last character, the plugin will register a 'fail' for the underline keyword category, prompting you to address the issue. In other words, you can use it to 'proofread' your on-page SEO.

My vote goes to All In One SEO. Using it for the last few years and having great results with it. I started playing with Yoast recently and find it full of features, installed it in a few blogs to test it out. May change to Yoast for all my sites if it is good.
 
I have stopped using All In One SEO but when I was using it, it seemed to work well. I use thesis pretty much all the time now, and it has basically all the features you need.

I do use Easy WP Seo though, which is great because it can scan the whole webpage when working out keyword density instead of just the post content.
