What rules should I follow when building a link pyramid ?

What rules should I be careful to obey when laying out a link pyramid? What types links should I look at avoid building on the first/second tier etc? And What are some good combos for different link properties?

Bookmarks in 1st tier for example... I've always heard it's a no-no but have seen a few people here doing it within small ones (2 properties in teir 1). Any reason?

First rule: there is no rules!
Second rule: follow the first rule...

bookmarking and pinging for fast indexing i read it somewhere, we don't need too much bookmarking for 1st tier...instead bookmark the 1st tiers to get it indexed and let it provide more link juices.
