So yeah just wondering if anyone has experience with a decent router I have never bought one because I usaully run my own cat5. I am in a 2 story place but the router that comes with the ISP is garbage and always cuts out.

Would you run your own cat5 or are routers nowadays way better (dlink, Netgear, Asus)?

I have used both dlink and Netgear - both have worked well. As you should know they do have multiple models so choose one that fits your budget and the expected wifi range.

This ^ is what I'd recommend as well. Ubnt hardwares are commercial grade and works rock solid 24/7/365.

People say it's an overkill, but the kit is actually very reasonably priced. I moved over to Ubiquiti a couple of years ago and I won't be going back to consumer kit like Asus, Linksys, Netgear etc.

I would run a cat 6 and put a router depending on how hard it is to run a cable at your house. Most routers are good i like linksys. Get some decent wire and it might solve your isp issues too.

Yea I was really thinking of doing this but I'm out of town working and have no time to run them so thinking just buy a decent router for now and then run cable to any dead or low spots, ie the attached garage.

I second the recommendation for Ubiquiti. I was using a nighthawk flashed with tomato which worked fine, but is nothing compared to my current unifi setup.

Router
  • USG-US Enterprise Gateway Router with Gigabit Ethernet - $95.00

Switch
  • Ubiquiti Networks UniFi Managed PoE+ Gigabit 8 Port Switch w/ SFP (150 W) - $160.00 - This has 8 ports of Power over Ethernet plus 2 SFP ports you can buy a cheap adapter to get a total of 10 ports. Note the SFP ports will not be POE.
or
  • Ubiquiti UniFi Switch 8 60W (US-8-60W) - $100.00 - This has 4 ports of power over ethernet and 4 that are unpowered.

Access Point
  • Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-PRO-E UniFi Access Point Enterprise Wi-Fi System - $120.00
or
  • Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-LITE-US Dual-Radio Access Points - $70.00

Controller
  • Ubiquiti Networks UC-CK Unifi Controller Cloud Key - $68.00

That makes it $443.00 for the more expensive route and $333.00 if you want to go a bit cheaper. Yes, you can go even cheaper if you like and you don't "need" a cloud key, but I highly recommend this setup with all Unifi products for ease of use and additional insights into your network. You can continue to build out your network with additional access points as needed, but for most homes, one or two AP's is all you need.

Also, check what modem you are currently using. You will not notice a huge improvement if you are still renting an old modem from your ISP. You can pickup a cheap SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 modem for about $50 or the newer SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 for around $160.
